MERLE STOOD OUTSIDE, under the olive tree. She clicked off her mobile and remembered she had forgotten to tell Pascal about Ruben’s phone, stuffed in his mattress. She would tell him tonight. The archeologists were still poking around in the outbuildings, taking up floorboards and climbing into lofts. If there had been wine barrels they would have been climbing inside them too. Their thoroughness wasn’t a blessing. She wished them done and gone.

A chill breeze made her shiver. She turned to go inside the house then saw the three suits, as she’d come to think of them, walking down the lane from the direction of the barns and the abbey ruins beyond. Maybe they were finished. She paused, waiting for them to arrive at their vehicles.

How many more days would they devote to this ridiculous search? She crossed her arms, slipping her cellphone in a back pocket. She needed to check on her chicks before it got dark.

They walked up slowly, heads low, discouraged or at least exhausted. DeFrais, the head man, was looking a bit ragged after three full days of this. Or was it four? Seemed like a week. His suit was dirty at the knees and elbows, his shoes covered with grime. It had rained a little last night. Nothing like mud to dirty up your adventure. Each man had a pair of blue surgical gloves hanging from a suit pocket.

“Madame,” deFrais said cordially.

“Monsieur deFrais. How does your search go?”

“We are finished for now.” He squinted at her. “Unless there is something more you wish to tell us.”

“I’ve told you everything I know.”

“Then I will write in my report that you were uncooperative and offered no assistance to my team.” He held up a hand as she began to protest. “No more, please, madame. You have made this as difficult as possible. The report will reflect that, I’m afraid. I can say no more.”

“Monsieur. Just because you didn’t find anything doesn’t mean that’s my fault. Have you thought that perhaps there was nothing to find? That all this —” she waved a hand at the other men and vehicles —" was just a wild goose chase?”

“Non, non. That is not possible, madame. I have said all I will.” He bowed his head so she could see his bald spot. “We bid you bonne soirée. Good evening.”
